Katrina Paterson: Superheroes and more

Written by Katrina Paterson, Designer & Project Assistant

Last week, Writing on the Wall kicked back into action our Super Heroes: Words Are Our Power project, after a summer break. We created over sixty new superheroes with Bishop Martin Primary School’s years 5 and 6. To start with we played a game of naming as many superheroes as we could think of in groups, with a special emphasis on female superheroes to which the classes did incredibly well, naming from Wonder Woman right down to X-Men’s Storm!

After we named some existing superheroes, we set about making our own. With our newly generated ‘Change for the Better’ worksheet, the pupils were asked to give their own hero a cause for their fighting. This worked extremely well, and generated huge ideas from stopping animal testing and preventing natural disasters, to the grounded ideas of fighting against bullying in their school, and finding equality for girls. These ideas were discussed, well thought out, and incredibly well received amongst the pupils.

To follow this, we created a superhero as a class. Coming up with powers, catchphrases, and causes of their own. In year 5 we had a girl who lived in Antarctica who was using her ice powers to prevent global warming and in year 6 we had a hero who was born in India who was trying to protect her animal friends from poachers.

Once we planted these threads for years 5 and 6, we allowed them some time to work out their own hero. From their backstory, to their costume design, all whilst remembering that they had a purpose to fight against.

I can’t wait to return this week and see all the new superheroes they have made, and, eventually, see the stories they will end up being a part of.
